World Grand Prix: Night 4 – Second Round wrapped up as Luke Littler makes Quarter-Finals

The crowd at the Mattioli Arena were treated to four encounters, which determined the final names that would make it into the last eight of the competition.

Night 4 – Match 1: DIRK VAN DUIJVENBODE vs DARYL GURNEY

The first match of the evening saw Dirk van Duijvenbode face 2017 champion Daryl Gurney. It was the Dutchman who made the better start, storming to the first set without reply to establish the early advantage.

It went from bad to worse for Superchin, as Dirk once again breezed through an entire set to nil, to put himself 2-0 up and within a set of the match.

The third set began just how the previous two had, with Dirk putting himself 2-0 to go within a leg of the quarters. Gurney was able to prevent the whitewash, holding to win his first leg before breaking to make the set 2-2 and send it to a fifth leg. Superchin couldn’t complete the set comeback however, as Dirk found a lovely 158 out to win the set, and record a 3-0 win to send him through to the last eight.

Night 4 – Match 2: JONNY CLAYTON vs LUKE WOODHOUSE

The next contest saw 2021 champion Jonny Clayton face Englishman Luke Woodhouse. The first set began with a trade of holds, before The Ferret gained control, winning the next two legs to take the set 3-

The second set was much better for Woodhouse, as he roared through, whitewashing the set to bring the tie level.

Clayton recovered at the start of the third set, holding then breaking to put himself 2-0 up. Woody managed to break straight back, but he couldn’t back it up, as The Ferret made it a third straight break of throw in the set, taking it 3-1 to put him 2-1 up in the match.

The Welshman continued his good form into the fourth set, winning the first two legs just like the set before. Woodhouse won the third leg to prevent the set whitewash, but he couldn’t keep the game going on any further. Clayton took leg four on throw, which secured a 3-1 win both in the set and in the match, and ensure his safe passage to the quarter-finals.

Night 4 – Match 3: LUKE LITTLER vs MIKE DE DECKER

Next up was a clash between the current world champion and Grand Prix champion, as Luke Littler faced Mike De Decker. The match started with an exchange of throws, before The Nuke asserted his dominance, winning the next two legs, to take the set 3-1 and gain an early lead.

The second set was more of the same for the world champion, with a break then a hold putting him 2-0 up and in an incredibly commanding position. The Real Deal prevented a set whitewash by winning leg three, but that was as good as it got for him. Littler comfortably held his throw in the next leg, to secure another 3-1 set win and put him within one of the match.

Just like the previous set, Littler won the opening two legs, to put him within a leg of the match. In that next leg, there was a magical moment. The Nuke saw himself sat on 170 for the match, and decided to go for it. He found the mark, reeling in the big fish to win the leg, which saw him over the line to win both the set and match 3-0, and send the reigning champion home.

Night 4 – Match 4: GERWYN PRICE vs JOSH ROCK

The final match of the evening and the second round was a clash between the 2020 champion Gerwyn Price and World Cup winner Josh Rock. The first set began with a trade of holds, which included a 106 out in leg two from Rock, to leave the set level. Price then took control, winning the next two legs to take the set 3-1 and go into the first break ahead.

The second set would be even better for The Iceman, as he breezed through it and recorded a set whitewash, putting him within a set of the next round.

Things went from bad to worse for Rock, with Price securing the third set by producing another whitewash, one which saw him win 3-0 and become the final name into this years quarter-finals.
