MATCH 1: Brendan Dolan v Tavis Dudeney
The first match of the day saw Tavis Dudeney make his Ally Pally debut against experienced player Brendan Dolan. The 21-year-old had a dream start, winning the first leg but Dolan responded well, equalising and then taking out 106 to turn the set around and win the throw.
Dolan settled into the first set, hitting double 10 to lead the match. The Northern Irishman carried on, taking a leg before being pegged back by Dudeney, but Dolan miraculously checked out 101 to go ahead once again.
Dudeney hit a number of 180s to inspire the youngster to an equalising leg, but the decider was won by Dolan, taking out another ton-plus finish in the big fish to go two sets up.
Dolan’s one downfall was his lack of maximum visits, which gifted Dudeney the opportunity to take a set back. Despite the resilience shown by the 21-year-old, Dolan pushed through to win the match.
Result: Brendan Dolan 3 Tavis Dudeney 1
MATCH 2: Cameron Menzies (26) v Charlie Manby
Cameron Menzies nearly had the perfect start, taking two legs and missing a nine-darter on the eighth dart against newcomer Charlie Manby. The 20-year-old halved the deficit and then equalised, but the deciding leg went in favour of Menzies.
Manby came back firing in the second set, pegging back Menzies numerous times and eventually taking the set to equalise the standings. Menzies struggled to hit his doubles in the third set, allowing Manby to take another leg, but the Scot quickly equalised and carried on to win the set.
Manby powered on to win another equaliser after Menzies managed to take the fourth set to a deciding leg. Manby checked out his first ton-plus finish to put himself a leg away from the second round and, after missing six match darts, the debutant finally won the match on double one – which led to an unfortunate outburst from Menzies, who hit the table in anger after losing.
Result: Menzies 2 Manby 3
MATCH 3: Mensur Suljovic v David Cameron
The third match of the afternoon started fairly evenly, with both players taking a leg before Mensur Suljovic went on and won the set. The Austrian continued dominating, but missed two doubles to extend his lead, allowing David Cameron to equalise. The set then went to a deciding leg, which was won by Cameron after Suljovic missed five darts for the set.
Cameron took the first leg of the third set, before Suljovic won three consecutive legs to go 2-1 up in sets. The Austrian then won another two legs before being pegged back by Cameron, but Suljovic won the match after Cameron missed a number of doubles.
Result: Suljovic 3 Cameron 1
MATCH 4: Peter Wright (30) v Noa-Lynn van Leuven
30th seed Peter Wright took a two-leg lead with a 152-checkout, but Noa-Lynn van Leuven hit the first maximum which spurred her on to get a leg back, but it wasn’t enough as Wright hit three out of three doubles to take a one-set advantage.
Set two started in similar fashion, with Wright hitting another double to go a leg up, but van Leuven checked out a ton-plus finish to equalise. The set was taken to a deciding leg which went in favour of “Snakebite” to double his lead.
The former world champion showed his form in the third and ultimately final set, quickly winning three legs and taking out 62 to set up a match against Arno Merk.
Result: Wright 3 van Leuven 0
