Gary Anderson Excusive: “Retirement ain’t coming soon”

By Stan Ashcroft

The two time World Champion said he “needed a lie down” following his thrilling performance against Jermaine Wattimena, which finished 4-3 to the ‘Flying Scotsman’. But before he could take a wee nap, he took the time to sit down in the Alexandra Palace media room to talk to the press.

As always, the Scotsman was in high spirits but asked the media in jest for us not to mention double 12, as he missed the target for what would have been this year’s first nine-darter.

“I bottled it a few times in that game, simple as that” said Anderson

“I could have easily had it wrapped up at 4-1 quite easily

“Scoring came good, plus I’ve got to get more 180s for the charity so it’s always good”

This week there has been a lot of talk about players watching darts and Ryan Searle mentioned in his press conference earlier that only his good friend Gary Anderson and Ryan Joyce were the two players who could potentially care less about darts, than he does.

Despite this, Searle admitted that he watched his forthcoming opponent play last night as Hurrell knocked out Stephen Bunting to make it to the round of 16 tie. When Anderson was asked if he would do the same he said:

“I don’t watch darts, nothing to do with darts.

“I have no interest in what’s going on, it’s my game, and that’s it.”

However, when asked if he would be going to watching Scotland in the World Cup this Summer he sounded more interested!

“Depends if I get some time off from the darts.

Anderson was reminded World Cup is on the same time as the World Series of Darts in New York so there could be a potential window there however, he was quick to turn his attention towards his family.

“We’ll see the kids are off school and all that, so I try to see them as much as possible

“I’m getting older, and quickly, so I need to spend time with them”

And finally he was asked, in true Christmas spirit, whether he’d had a nice Christmas.

“Aww yeah, I’ll be working for the next ten days to cover the cost.

“My retirement ain’t coming soon” he joked.

Anderson will play the winner of either Michael van Gerwen or Arno Merk on Tuesday 30th December in the round of 16.
