David Munyua pleas for PDC to bring darts to Africa after fairytale Ally Pally journey

By Oliver Powell

The unknown hero born at the 2026 World Darts Championships was undoubtedly Kenyan player David Munyua, who stunned Mike De Decker in the first round before exiting the competition at the hands of Kevin Doets.

Despite the whitewash defeat, Munyua called for further commitment from the PDC to help other African players get the opportunity to play darts on the biggest stage and follow in the legacy created by Munyua and his phenomenal story.

Munyua was unable to replicate the miracle he produced in the first round as he was well-beaten by Doets, but the journey in his first trip out of his continent has etched his name in darting folklore and he hopes encourages a greater participation of darts back home.

Munyua said: “I want to challenge the PDC aswell. Please bring this sport to Africa and bring these players to Africa.

“Let the PDC bring the sport, then everybody can see this game is for everyone and they can create life for any kid there.”

Munyua has shown there is untapped territory for the PDC in Africa, with the current World Series of Darts not travelling to the continent a potential avenue for growth for the corporation.

Whilst the Kenyan’s name has been on the lips of all darts supporters, Munyua demonstrated a huge appreciation for the opportunity he had at Ally Pally and remained humble in understanding how much his emergence could do for those at home.

Munyua said: “Just having that one appearance is doing a lot for the sport [in Africa].

“If this is how it is in Kenya, it should do it in different countries it would be amazing.

“Everybody can be like, if Munyua is doing it, then why not?”

Whilst the Munyua miracle is over for 2026, there was no doubts in his mind that he wants to return to the Ally Pally stage next year and continue the inroads he’s made in putting Africa on the darting map.

Munyua said: “I’ll do my best to be back here; it will be different as it will not be my first time.

It will be better than my first time.”

Nicknamed ‘Why Not?’, Munyua has shown in his breakout tournament on the biggest stage that he is capable to compete with the best players despite only first throwing a dart in 2022.

With another year of practice, the question is ‘why not’ for Munyua to return to the Palace and go even further than he achieved this year?
